Best Time to Visit

Rwanda’s temperate climate makes it a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on the experiences you’re after. Like its neighbors, Rwanda has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons:

  • Long dry season: June to September – The best time for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, with clearer trails and excellent wildlife viewing.
  • Short dry season: December to February – Also great for primate tracking and exploring Rwanda’s lush landscapes in more comfortable conditions.
  • Long rains: March to May – The countryside is beautifully green, but the rains can make some areas harder to access.
  • Short rains: October to November – Less rainfall than the long rainy season, with fewer crowds and vibrant natural scenery.

Boat Safari on Lake Ihema

Set off on a calm boat safari in Akagera National Park’s Lake Ihema. As you go through calm waters, you’ll see many of different birds, crocodiles, and hippos. Intimate encounters with Rwanda’s varied species are possible from this unusual vantage point, all against the stunning background of the lake.
